What are the different types of carports?

A carport is a covered but open-sided structure that offers limited protection for cars from rain and snow. The interesting thing about carports is that they come in many styles and designs. Let’s dive into the different types of carports. Carports can be freestanding or attached to a wall, but they never have four walls.

The different types of carports

1. Gable Roof

Found to be the most popular choice, a gable roof is easy to build. Described as two slopes that face each other that overlap at the ridge. The main advantages of a gable roof are that they’re affordable, sturdy, and reliable. A perk of having a sloped roof is that it prevents the rain from getting in,

2. Flat Roof

Flat roof carports are made of metal or plastic by a sheet attached to the walls and a railing. One main benefit of flat roof carports is that they’re cheaper than gable roof carports and they’re less noticeable. However, due to the lack of slope, debris, and snow will collect easily on the roof and take longer to fall off.

3. The Dutch Gable

Dutch gables are the same width as gable roofs, but their ridge sits above the gable’s peak. Its lack of vertical beams further sets it apart from the gable roof. A perk of the dutch roof is that it’s cheaper. However, a disadvantage is that it is far less sturdy than a flat or gable roof.

4. Hip Roof

Sometimes referred to as a shed roof, the hip roof has four different slopes which meet at a peak. Hip roofs are considered the most durable carports but, sadly, the most expensive. If you live in a windy location, hip roofs are your best option but bear in mind that they’re quite tricky to build.

5. Skillion

Skillion carports are slightly angled roofs that are straightforward to build. However, while it is the cheapest carport, it’s far less sturdy. Therefore they’re best used in areas that don’t get a lot of rain or snow. An advantage of skillion carports is that they can be freestanding or attached to your home.

How can you build your carport?

Carports are an excellent option for car owners looking to protect their vehicles from weather damage. Building your carport isn’t as complicated as you might expect, especially with the right team of professionals. Whether you’re looking for a temporary or permanent solution, a well-designed carport can add value to your property and keep your car protected from external elements. With the increasing need for car ownership, building a carport is an investment that pays off in the long run.

1. Prepare the Ground

Firstly, you need to get the necessary building permits. Then, preparing the ground for your carport involves measuring and leveling the ground.

2. Build the Beams

Next, dig holes for the posts, which should set the six posts into them. After this, pour six inches of concrete into the holes before setting the posts.

3. Build the Roof

Now, fasten the rafters to the side beams, as these will support the roof. Then, you should install corrugated PVC sheets to the roof, repelling any snow, UV rays, fire, and water.

4. Check for Stability

Inspect the structure by applying excessive movement to test how solid it is. If you have any concerns, add braces as reinforcement to enhance its strength.
