Perhaps only its arresting art arrangements, design-forward furnishings, and trademark urban vistas would remind you you’re in the heart of New York City. Or perhaps not: after all, with four bedrooms and two-and-a-half baths that span a magnificent 3,000 square feet and unfurl languorously across two floors, this loft defies every spatial truth of city living. Things eddy calmly here, within reach of the soothing city susurrations but protected from the crush of the urban tide.

Your hosts are a dynamic couple deeply passionate about design. It isn’t surprising to learn, then, that their ingenuity and creativity forged this home from stem to stern, including the design and much of its artwork. From location to layout, it’s hard to imagine a more satisfying port of call.

Come to harbour at a whitewashed great room laid in smooth hardwood floors and filled with a rush of natural light. Two sofas greet one another at an angle, complemented by searing nips of colour flashing from volumes placed carefully here and there. In one fluid movement you’re in the dining area and from here, the kitchen: take your pick of the blonde wood dining table – only as formal or the industrial-elegant eat-in island framed everywhere in high-gloss whites.

Wending your way down a nautilus staircase, a suite of pristine quarters is led by the master bedroom. Between a wall full of clever art pieces and the vintage charm of a water tower just outside, the pull of two aesthetic currents is irresistible. Never mind: follow the tides into the seashell-white and seaglass-green master ensuite, where a glossy china bowl tub promises to soothe forth rich memories of the day’s excitement.

The Flatiron District buoys at a special city crossroads. Drift easily from Chelsea to Soho to the West Village, or scour the vibrant markets and human spectacle at Union Square strides away. Then sail away if you must: the neighbourhood is excellently served by subway, with a hearty selection of lines passing through various stations on 14th Street.
